PROVINCETOWN — The Pilgrim Monument in Provincetown will turn 100 on August 5th, 2010.

The statuesque, 252-foot granite Pilgrim Monument was completed in 1910 to commemorate the Pilgrims' first landing in America Nov. 21, 1620, in Provincetown. The Pilgrims also signed the Mayflower Compact, an early declaration of self-governance, in Provincetown harbor.

Back 100 years ago, the monument's dedication on August 5th 1910, was a national revelation. Three years earlier President Theodore Roosevelt had arrived to help lay down the first cornerstone and kick off the construction. Then with the monument's completion in 1910, bleachers were built around the base to seat 3,000 people. A U.S. Navy fleet sailed into the harbor. President William H. Taft arrived on the presidential yacht Mayflower and anchored roughly where the original Mayflower was thought to have anchored. Taft addressed the crowd after an introduction by Governor Eben Draper. At the end of the ceremony, a young Mayflower descendant unveiled a commemorative plaque on the monument. Afterward, the partying went late into the night with a dinner for 500 people and a ball at town hall.

Lots of people — including Governor Deval Patrick will be here for the celebration but not President Obama even though he was invited.

The wreck of the British warship HMS Somerset III, which was guarding Boston Harbor the night Paul Revere slipped by on his legendary journey to Lexington in 1775, has resurfaced in the shifting sands off Cape Cod.

Federal park officials, saying they may have only a limited window of opportunity, are seizing the moment and having the wreck “digitally preserved’’ using three-dimensional imaging technology.

“We know the wreck is going to disappear again under the sand, and it may not resurface again in our lifetimes,’’ said William P. Burke, the historian at the Cape Cod National Seashore, noting that the last time any part of the Somerset had been sighted was 37 years ago.

“Somewhere down the road, if someone’s researching the Somerset, or the effects of ocean currents on shipwrecks, or anything like that, they will have this record,’’ he said. “We’re in the forever business. We’re looking at tomorrow, but we’re also looking ahead indefinitely.’’

The Somerset fought in the American Revolution and had a crew of more than 400. In 1775, Paul Revere slipped past the ship before beginning his ride to Lexington to warn the colonials that the British were on the move. In his poem “Paul Revere’s Ride,’’ Henry Wadsworth Longfellow called it “a phantom ship, with each mast and spar/Across the moon like a prison bar.’’ The ship sank on Nov. 2, 1778, off the Cape.

Humpback whales spotted off coast of Cape Cod

Dozens of humpback whales were spotted off the coast on Thursday in Provincetown. Restrictions have been put into place to make sure the whales are protected. “The biggest threat" in the past had been ship strikes, but a year ago the federal government passed a regulation to slow ship speeds up and down the eastern seaboard while these whale moved into the Cape Cod coast.

Scientists said they're encouraged about the future of the whales, who have experienced a bit of a baby boom in recent years. The hope is that the more people see these beautiful creatures, the better the commitment to help them thrive. ________________________________________

In response to this article in the Boston Globe: “WINTER hardships felt at land’s end’’ (Metro, Feb. 14), I asked my first manager Tom O'Leary (a wonderful writer) to respond to the editor, since I knew that Tom would agree with me that this article was interesting but that the point of view was narrow.

The Boston Globe then published his response which is below:

Provincetown has always been quieter in the winter whether the economy was thriving or not. The serene winter solitude is what I loved best when I lived in Provincetown year round in the mid-to-late 90's. In the cold months you don't find yourself packed like a sardine on Commercial Street as you do in July or August.

For those of us who adore Cape Cod not for the masses of tourists but for the sky and sand and sea ---winter is heaven. The "off season" is really my favorite time of year in Provincetown. There are still plenty of wonderful restaurants. The bars are still filled with charming characters. The guest houses, especially my favorite---The Revere House---are comfy and cozy and a lot more affordable and easier to book than in the summer.

My humble opinion is that people who have read the gloom and doom of this article should get in a car or on a plane and experience winter in Provincetown yourself. I guarantee you will not be disappointed.

It is the tallest all-granite structure in the United States. Visitors can walk to the top on a series of stairs and ramps. Lily Tomlin to perform in Provincetown on Saturday, Aug. 29

Veteran Provincetown performer, lifelong visitor and passionate animal lover Lily Tomlin returns to Ptown on Saturday, Aug. 29 for a one-night-only show on MacMillan Pier to benefit Pilgrim Bark Park, the a new, non-profit, off-leash dog park and animal welfare resource.

Called "The D Word: A Top Dog Event," Tomlin is slotted to perform "Classic Lily" at 8 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 29. Prior to the show, host and comic Kate Clinton kick off the evening with a silent and live auction at 5 p.m.

Hungry pilgrims weren’t the only cargo aboard the Mayflower when it made its first New World landing in Provincetown in 1620--at least two dogs were on board as well.

Today, Provincetown remains one of the most welcoming canine retreats, with more than 30 pet-friendly places to stay, off-leash beaches and trails and doggie-friendly patio dining. Opened in 2009, The Pilgrim Bark is solely supported by volunteers and private donations. It was established to reflect the town’s love of dogs and provide animal welfare resources to the community.

The park also reflects the town’s long history as a thriving artist colony as evidenced by the benches and dog houses designed and painted by local artists.

Woody Allen's 'Whatever Works' kicks off Ptown film fest

The opening night film at the Provincetown Film Festival will be the New England premiere of Woody Allen's "Whatever Works" starring Larry David, Evan Rachel Wood, Patricia Clarkson and Ed Begley, Jr.

Allen returns to New York with an offbeat comedy about a crotchety misanthrope (David from "Curb Your Enthusiasm") and a naïve, impressionable young runaway from the South (Wood). When her uptight parents (Clarkson and Begle.) arrive to rescue her, they are quickly drawn into wildly unexpected romantic entanglements.

Everyone discovers that finding love is just a combination of lucky chance and appreciating the value of "whatever works."

The film festival will take place in Provincetown from June 17-21. "Whatever Works" screens at the Art House beginning at 6:45 p.m. Wednesday, June 17.

'Naked Boys Singing' returns Thursday, June 25

"Naked Boys Singing," the musical revue with stark naked guys, returns to Provincetown summer 2009. Opening Thursday, June 25 at the Post Office Café and Cabaret, "Naked Boys Singing" is a traditional musical revue, in the vein of Vaudeville and high-camp musical theater, which reminds us that clothes alone do not make the man.

The show features six handsome "boys" of various body types with voices, perfect comedic timing, and, well, no clothing. With song titles ranging from "The Bliss of a Briss" to the culinary inspired "I Beat My Meat," "Naked Boys Singing" is 60 minutes of non-stop naughty laughs.

"Naked Boys Singing" opens Thursday, June 25 at The Post Office Café and Cabaret located at 303 Commercial Street. General Admission tickets are $25 and VIP tickets (first two rows) are $40. Information on where and how to purchase tickets to be announced in the near future.

In addition to the charming seaside splendor that only Provincetown can provide, there are many party planners, caterers, venues, and other helpful businesses that make it simple, easy, and comfortable for future newlyweds to plan their special day.

The Pilgrim Monument and Provincetown Museum rents its spacious outdoor grounds for weddings. Besides the opportunity to trade vows under the monument’s regal 250-foot tower, the venue’s hillside perch affords gorgeous views of the Atlantic Ocean and Cape shore.

If it’s more than a view of the water you want, consider holding your ceremony on one of Provincetown’s beaches. Town beaches do not require a permit, but, you also can not block access to the general public.
